What Makes Us Care

George Loewenstein tries to find out why sometimes knowing more about a particular tragedy makes us less likely to help. Sympathy works in mysterious, non-rational ways.

There seems to be a bit of bystander effect in there.

absolutely. and altruism is quite sensetive to being observed. but I don't think this can explain why adding statistical information decreases the amount given.
